So I thought I put our swiss screw to work for the greater cause and I figured this would be it  ;D

They work awesome now I just need to figure out how to blacken them I figured I would try Birch wood Casey's brass blackening and see how it goes.

My boss says if i buy the material I can pound out as many as I want as time allows  ;D

Was wondering how you crank out multiples on a lathe. Is there some sort of story board guide that you follow to get the exact same size every time?

Unfortunately, Picasa has changed the linking code to this fancy new crap that has a table cell in order to contain the image plus some text and other extra junk. I've cleaned out the nonsense from your post.

These were made in pieces on a high precision 5 axis Citzen CNC (computer controled) lathe the parts come off the machine complete no deburing nothing all I have to do is assemble.
There is three peices two wheelsone with the axle and tiny plastic bushing then I made a special press to assenble them so they run true and to stay in gauge.

I hope this answers your question Chris.

Basically once I wrote the code/programs to do this and make sure it is right I push start and walk away ;D

Nope.  AZL make modern trucks with metal wheels, but doesn't sell the wheels.  I'm sure you could sell 500-1000 without blinking.

When you grab the new Picasa link code, it looks like this:

You need to grab the image URL, which is located inside the <img> tag, between the quotes after src=

I would be willing to purchase a bunch in Z Scale. But I would want them unlike the ones above, rather both sides metal points, with a hole on the inside for plastic axle stock. That way the wheels could be used for all wheel electrical pickup.


Something like this, where the plastic axle isolates the wheels, and we can make our own sheet phosphor bronze dimple inserts to fit inside the MTL trucks. That way we can get true low friction needle bearing all wheel pickup for some of our powered car projects!  Also, as an everyday replacement for MTL plastic wheels.

Well let me ponder on the Z scale and see if it is worth doin something and if and how to make it possible.

And it will have to wait till I run off a lifetime supply of my own wheels ;D ;D

Better jump quick before your boss gets new shop orders and changes his mind! We have been rallying metal wheels for years, but people just keep finding reason after reason to refuse my buckets full of money!

I could see some problems with plastic-axle wheelsets. One, unless it's realy thick, plastic is a bit weak to use as an axle, particularly as it's press-fit into metal, as opposed to being molded in one piece from Delrin-esque plastic, per normal wheelsets. Two, it makes it harder to keep the wheels in gauge. Kadee tried this many moons ago, and they were the most problematic wheelsets they ever made. I agree it would be great to use them for electrical pickup, but not at the risk of tolerance issues.

Looking for suitable axle material is hard, but I found .062 diameter Nylon Rod for $.65 a foot, which would make materail cost at about 2 cents per axle based off a .3" axle length. Actual measurements would need to be adjusted of course, and some way to precisely cut the axles.
