I've never been much for conspiracy theories, but I'll take a look at your suggested readings.

wow, a well researched survey of the economy during the war years is a conspiracy?  there is a conspiracy, it perpetuates the myth that the US was the golden child and that WWII was a war of good over evil.  sure Hitler killed 6 millions Jews and another 2 million "others" and it was horrible and inhuman, but we need not look any further than our own history to see such evil.  Just ask your Choptank and Nanticoke neighbors - wait, they were removed...

and never mind Stalin was our pal and how many Russians did he have killed?  and then there is the Brits and their record of awesomeness around the globe.

I don't think too many of us here really belive there us true good and true evil anywhere. But who among us is directly responsible for any of this?

I think, in the spirit of the season, as well as the spirit of this board, that we should perhaps rein in this discussion (myself included, guilty as charged) and keep it more topical.

Happy holidays, folks.

oh, you meant the myth of how the US was brought into the war, go back and brush up on your history - Pearl Harbor was not the first attack on the US by the Japanese or the Germans.  it was a convenient example that could be shown the the US public, a public which was divided on going to war.  the origins of WWII started back in the 1870's - the pot boiled over and the bullets started to fly, several times.

Hmmm .. Hessians in Trenton .. Flanders ..

SS Lusitania
USS Reuben James

Learning about the PC freight car fleet makes it even more amazing to see some
of their freight cars surviving about 35 years later. I'm know most are scrap but I
just saw a PC box car the other day with brown CR paint washing off of it. I
guess some of these freight cars just defy the odds.

It's not so much that the cars are defying the odds, it's that Al Perlman from the NYC was in charge of the PC long enough to put some of his beliefs into practice. He believed that the PC needed to completely modernize in order to stay competitive, and this included the freight car fleet. So I think it is him who should be thanked for the large numbers of H54s and G47s still running around on today's railroads. Sadly, the financial alchemists at PC thought it was silly to be spending money to upgrade track and equipment when they could have been paying their stockholders a dividend. So we all know how that ended...
