Ugh, the "Kitty" in the Valhalla of the B&O. I am not quite as rabid as Lee over the use of "Chessie" for trains running in the B&O museum, but I do think it was a very ugly color scheme best forgotten as rapidly as possible.

C'mon guys!  Don't be so quick to blame that poor cat.  It's not her fault.  In fact, Chessie (the cat) predates the Chessie System marketing scheme and unfortunate subsequent mergers by approximately sixty years as a mascot for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.  Looking back at the advertising of Chessie; her mate, Peake; and the kittens, Nip and Tuck, is actually quite interesting, especially the promotions in and around World War Two.

The writing was on the wall for the WM since 1927 or so when the B&O obtained a sizeable block of WM stock.  Penn Central, or at least the events leading up to it, might have influenced the timing, but regrettably, it probably would have happened 50 years earlier had the Great Depression not intervened.  Full control of the WM occurred in 1967, about a year before PC came about.
