I asked about them being removed because I check my GP15-1 pics and they are all missing theirs. Then as I searched the net it seemed like it was around 1995 when they started to disappear.

Chris, I imagine both NS and CSXT would remove them prior to selling any power to a dealer or another railroad, as they specifically operate in conjunction with the PRR signal system (position light). Probably install the old boxes on new power.

Now, how about someone with the Sunrise part N-502 measuring it and answering Catt's question?? I would but I don't have any.

  1542 and 1560 the two units ATLAS modeled still have the conmtrol boxes mounted which is why I want to add them to my two units.There are pictures of both in YN-3 on the CSX Photo Achives site.

  As for the Sunrise parts there haven't been any available around here (West Mich.) for a couple years.

I wouldn't trust the dimensions of the Sunrise part, actually.

Some of our NJT/MN diesels have those boxes.  I will swing by work later on and see if there are any sitting around.  If so, I will get some measurements.  I seem to remember a Conrail training film they showed me in Engineer school where they referred to that box as the "EL system".  Nothing to do with Erie Lackawanna, just the type of cab signal box.

I used a styrene strip cut to length with brass wire pieces glued on, as others have suggested. The box on this particular unit should be significantly fatter, but it's what I had on hand and can be replaced when I get around to it. The bulky handrails disguise the innacurracy somewhat anyway. (I also need to address the gap at the bottom of the cab!)



My only advice is to work from photos of the actual unit you're modeling. Here's a GP30, e.g., with the smaller type box, but note how elevated off the walkway it is.

Where'd you get that horn from? I like it! It looks good for a bunch of other units I've seen with smaller horns than the stock atlas ones.
It's so funny seeing someone doing the exact same thing I did.

You may want to get in there with a fine brush and some black paint and work on the step area. That's one place where I think a little work goes a LONG way.

Ed, I got the idea for moving the horn from your thread. Thanks! The horn itself is Atlas part 497204, which I believe were the original horns for the B23-7. I notice in the various photos of CR GP30's that they had several varieties of horns also.

Oh yes, my GP30 needs a bit of weathering--not just the step areas but the grills, roof and nose top as well.

EDIT: BTW the Sinclair antenna is a Sunrise part, but your comments about the horn reminded me that it's time to order some more parts, so I ordered more horns and some Sinclair antennas from Atlas.

The black I'm talking about isn't just weathering though. It has to do with the blue plastic that they use for the actual step inserts.

Got out to the yard today.  While none of our diesels with the cab signal box were around, there was a Conrail GP40-2 there with one.  The engine was number 3001, and ex-Reading geep.  I have more photos, Ed I will e-mail them to you for your records.  I threw the dimensions on the photo.  Enjoy.
