Were the black GS4s used for passenger service also? What about freight service?

I'll check this with my GS book when I'm home but I think the colour scheme is the one adopted during WW2 for passenger trains.

The CNW heritage unit makes 3 now. Wonder how long until they get other Roadnames out.

The CNW uses the same body as the SP and Rio Grande units. The next three will use a different body shell, or if Kato makes it like the SD80/9043, just a different rear end of the long hood.
Which ever side of the track I am on is the right side.

At least a second announcement of ACE's with an ETA a month after the firsts gives me some encouragement that these will be delivered on time....

I want to see a G in grime with one wide stripe on the engineer's side (and none on the fireman's side) with crooked CRs.  I have a picture of just such a beast in a 1977 issue of Rails Northeast, and I think there's a photo in Fallen Flags.

I'm also partial to the 1960's broad stipe and large keystone scheme.

Re: katousa.com: GS4 Wartime...

On the wartime GS4's, shouldn't the description be that the skirts were REMOVED for easier maintenance, or am I missing something...

For an SPF, this would not be an issue!  For the crud and missing stuff, invite me up and buy the adult malt beverage and I'll do the same quality job.   ;D

On the GS4s the skirts were removed during the late 40s so for WW2 this is ok. Likewise the small tender lettering went out in 1946 (to be replaced by the large style). These locos should also have a light shroud fitted over the head lights, but which style of shroud is determined by road number and date.

There's another layer to the GS "Warbabies". They were built without the wheel shrouds and with different skyline casings and I believe spoked drivers to save steel for the war effort. Richard, my boss can tell you road numbers etc., etc. as he's an EsPee fan. I'll see if he can give me a site with photos and the details. The entire GS story get quite invovled. The "plain Jane" black GS-4's were used on fast freights and any passenger train needing the power, mainly on the Coastal Route.

Think you are refering to the GS6 class which was built during the war in black and without skirts, and looks similar to the GS4s.

Yeah. Mechanically just about the same, but they weren't "pretty" at all. They would pull the same tonnage, they were a bit heavier(used cheaper materials). Maybe next week Richard can get me the web-site on EsPee's GS's.
