I painted the whole tree with the trunk color so the bright green is gone. I figured any brown that showed through would just look like thinned leaves showing the branches. And yes it was semi-gloss with Aqua-net hair spray over it. The final product would need to be flat or Dullcoted. (Plus no leaves stuck on the trunk  ;)  )
