I just won this DS4-4-660:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170264832461

And I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on improving the mechanism.  I am also open to replacement as an option because I plan on painting a detailing the thing anyway.
Thanks much,

Try it out first. Some run fairly decent, if noisy(all brass gears I believe). Outer's "Gunslick" is a fantastic lube for all brass gears. It will quickly quiet things down. If I remember correctly, these are geared at "slot-car" speed, so the Atlas "slow speed" motor (if it will fit) would be helpful. If the Atlas motor won't fit, a Faulhaber gear-head motor is an exspensive, but good solution. Once you find a workable drive-train set-up, you can add lots of weight inside that brass shell, which will help many things, like electrical pick-up and pulling power, and still have room for several of the new "micro" DCC decoders, if you want to go that way. As I recall, these are fairly nice models overall, so think of it as an "enginnerring project" for a good drive-train. Best of luck to you.

I have a Hallmark U30B - it runs very well - nice slow speed performance. So yeah, see how it runs first.

Well, I'm going to have to commit blasphemy and detail the thing.  The lack of details on the roof is horrendous; and as much as I paid for this thing, I want something that looks exactly like NS 661.  So, I've asked the gods* for roof shots, and maybe I'll get them and the model at about the same time.

I finally received this thing from the other end of Canada.  It seems to run decently, but it is far too loud for my tastes, so a repower is going to happen.  I'm thinking about keeping the motor, but I will be applying new trucks.

I've also got to figure out how to redetail the thing.
