Atlas C40-8

Let's see - the Atlas C40-8 was "conceived" in February - which means it should be ready to "arrive" this month??? 

Isn't this model taking a ridiculously long time to come???

Do they have stalks delivering these things???

You know, in these poor economic times, Atlas might be having troubles getting the things over here. Or, they just think that not many people in the US have the money to buy the 28+ units that they want so they figured sales will go up if they create more demand by delaying the shipments...

There could be alot of reasons for teh delay. Economic is one. Factory ddelays is a big one as well as tweaking the dsesign.

It is VERY doubtful however that Atlas is trying to build demand by withholding delivery. I'd be willing to bet a paycheck against that one. ESPECIALLY on this loco. They don;t market like Precision Craft.

yep - I know. I remember asking Paul about these like 16 year ago when you used to see him at the Model Railroad Shop in Piscataway!

In all seriousness, it will be a nice surprise to get them at all!

I think another problem may be that the C40-8 creates the anticipated demand for the c40-8W and I wonder if people are holding back waiting for that one?

My other concern is the mechanism, because the Atlas 6 axles have not always been as nice as the 4 axles. 

I never planned to pick up more than one, at least at first anyway.

It would get done. The whole C(W)40 series were a major compnent of railroading in the late 80's thru the 90's. Now you modern guys just need for the Dash 9's to reappear and you'll have it made from '87 all the way to present.

I can afford to wait, I got 3 MP15s coming before the 3 C40-8 I ordered come. It would completely kill me if all 6 showed up at once.

I thought they were waiting for our tax returns to come in so it wouldn't hit us so hard?  Heck, I was a month and a day late so why not the C40s?

Just a guess, but the impact of the Olympics in Beijing and the earthquake earlier in the year plus China's 10%+ per annum economic growth is all probably having an impact on China's infrastructure capability.

Add to that there are more and more model railway companies starting up with new models on offer - the UK, Japan and Australia for exmaple - not just the US - the factories I would imagine are overwhelmed and probably making unsustainable promises on delivery times.

So the production lines are clogged, the roads are clogged, the rails are clogged and the wharves are clogged - yup delivery times may just be shot to pieces.

Of course no reason that Atlas and others couldn't fess up and tell us.

But it's probably $10-$20 cheaper than the second run will be.

Yes, but by the time these are released the manufacturers will have been hit with two price increases. One that hit in August that had to be re-figured into this model and the one still coming in January. This price falls right in line with those increases and gives Atlas a little room to breath. Don't forget they they are eating any cost increases on products they announced before the August increase but have not yet been delivered. I think they deserve some credit for that.
