Beer on a Canadian's train layout.... like "who'd have thunk that eh ?"

We have a number of through waybills for Beer for our Insulated-Heated (XMIH) cars on the club layout. (CPR Sudbury, 1970s) I don't think beer was typically shipped in non-insulated cars like the regular ones currently spotted at your brewery though.

I think I remember an older thread where you showed some nicely weathered yellow CP XMIH boxcars.

Those cars would not ship beer; nor are they intended to; obviously you would want insulated cars. They are spotted for unloading packaging ( corrugated, boxboard, glass, crowns and pallets (CPC style)) and raw materials.

Only the largest breweries would usually ship full car loads of beer by the 1970's and a regional brewery like mine would ship virtually all product by road; it would, however still receive raw materials and packaging via rail; thus the 40' cars.

I never made it back to any painting this week but I was able to finish a set of decals for the Atlas steel rebuilts that arrived.




Now I need to figure out the interesting shade of bcr the these cars had.

Put me down for a set of those decals if you think of selling any!!

I would go with a light Tuscan Oxide Red like the Model Flex 16-14.

I also think the photo is color shifted to the blue side so I did
a little tweeking of the photo in Thumbs plus and came up with this.

Time for some late Penn Central and early Conrail love!  I'm no Rich Yourstone or Tom Mann, so please bear with me:

Weathered this MicroTrains PC hopper (added real coal and added ACI label as well):



I love Atlas Trainman because they're so cheap yet well painted.  Here I've weathered a 50' Trainman flat (and added another ACI label along with some debris to the deck):



Up next is an Atlas FGE boxcar as a Penn Central X73, once again weathered (and ACI label added):



By 1980 (the era in which I model Conrail) many of these cars had been restenciled for Conrail rather hastily, often by painting out the PC logos with fresh PC green paint and adding new dimensional data.  That's what I attempted here:

Last is a MicroTrains PRR X29 MOW boxcar...  These were still in service in PRR MOW yellow even in the Conrail era; by 1980 they were rolling rust buckets.  My version is actually less rusty than what the proto photos show:





I used acrylic washes and chalks for the weathering and Microscale decals.

Dave: I am becoming a convert to the "Trainman" stuff; specifically the flats...I can't decorate a flat for what they charge me, nevermind the time and although they are a wee bit "chunky" (bah, who cares) they are well painted and can be used for all sorts of things; like yours.... Here's one a few pulp wood flats I'm labouring over....
