Weekend Update - 9-21-2008

Well, another weekend has passed ... what have you been up to ..

For me, its going to be a day of cooking steaks and Alaskan King Crabs .. It's my 53rd anniversary on this planet ..

I put together the Walthers double track truss bridge ..  I happened to be in MB Kleins neighborhood, so I just had to stop in and buy something..  I also picked up an Atlas code 55 2 track plate girder bridge .. very nice ..

I FINALLY finished ( ok, I still have grabs, but I might not do em...) the Canadian National Skytop "Gaspe'"..........



Do you have any idea how small a "CN" wiggly worm" decal for the drumhead I had to run..? It took the high end laser printer on it's highest setting and a bit of trial and error but it finally worked !



Marty Coil put me onto the Testor Window Magic and I finally found some. Works well after some practice - lots of windows on these beasties... I "tinted" all windows slightly blue as in the prototype with a thin wash of GTW blue paint - passes the 2' rule......

All in all I'm pleased .... if you want to model a Skytop you can't go wrong with Jim Stillman's shells, they are excellent to work with......now to get the courage to do Jim's "Superdome" shell.............

I also finished (It was resin cast week I guess) two more of our Pacific Great Eastern 40' Can Car vans - this week's addition - side door reefers in the original PGE scheme.............



Trailer 100 is coming up to Empire to be loaded....... the orange shunt cab seems to be colour custom made for a PGE trailer...!



Shunt driver Elmer Clunkenbash has her almost backed into the dock.... another original livery trailer and a newer livery PGE reefer are also at Empire today.............



One more check of the mirrors and a "Hail Mary" and ol' Elmer will have her at the dock.....



In and ready to be loaded, the PGE's trailer fleet is on the job serving Northern BC communities....

More trailers and heaven knows what next week.... Tim Horton's (BCR 570) trailer project has been a wonderful success; all the guys involved must be just as happy as I am ! - Tim; you've got "Reefer Madness" goin on .... (LOL)

I did my first dabbling with rapid prototying to get a correct CGW light package on the GP30.



I've decided I can live with the factory Atlas grabs since the handrails are so far out of scale anyway and I'm not about to change those anytime soon.  So if I can match the paint I just need to move the horn and and some shades and renumber a couple.  The Atlas unit also has the advantage of using a smaller emblem since a true 36" crosses the part line plus the molded red handrails saves a lot of problems.

Exceptional work all . I finished a month long photo shoot of everything I have on railroad wheels item by item for my screen saver . I subdivided them by type into 20 files or so . Its odd seeing them come up and me being able to view them from across the room with better clarity and size than if I held them in my hand . Then yesterday and today I did my quarterly 66 CD backup copies . Tomorrow its finally back to those last two Island Modelworks MP54's .

Happy Birthday John. I just picked several some of the Walthers double track girder bridges from Kleins... Was pretty surprised to find out each actually includes 2 double-track bridges! Not sure if this was a packaging error or something, the advertising says nothing about the kit containing 2 bridges, but I'm certainly not complaining. I should be good on these for the entire layout now  ;D

David, that O scale layout is looking great

David - I'll wait until you start modeling z-scale storms to have you committed.  But if someone does haul you off before that, at least request a room with internet so you can continue to post.    The finish on that drain is perfect (same with the trackside box last week).

Chris - what can I say?

I've been trying out some more fade & weathering variants on boxcars this week.  I'll post something to my Fading thread (in the weathering section) when it's farther along.

unfortunately I can't see them there, as mentioned before, only little red Xs - but I'm glad you did #4874 and not #4822 (I did just finish put the decals on mine) ...

Been working on more narrow gauge stuff, and I also started the Beaufort and Morehead pile driver.  I managed to demolish the bottom of my Dismal Swamp RR passenger car, so I have to redo that, this time from brass.
