Weekend Update - 8-24-2008

Ok, what have you been up to. For me, I finally got back to work on the layout. I put in 8 feet of glueshell scenery on the upper level .. mainly to keep trains from falling off

I discovered a minor modification to the glue shell method .. put 2 parts hydrocal in with 3 parts glue .. mix in some dark paint, enought to make the glue change color to a dark shade, then paint this mixture onto the paper shell .. it eliminates the need to go back later on and add more layers of glue .. fills in better, and sets up harder ..

I took off on a side excursion to build a power plant for Motisa Machine Works from the Con-Cor (Piko) Boiler House I picked up dirt cheap from Con-Cor. Hoped to have photos for today, but have not final assembled, weathered and Dullcoted account TS Fay. It's been so humid here these last 3 days you can cut the air with a knife...Very little hard rain and wind, but constant drizzle.

I didn't get much done as I'm recovering from an emergency appendectomy I had Wednesday night...  I'll be on convalescent leave this week so my plan is, as soon as it's comfortable to sit at my workbench, to begin converting this Penn Central SD35 into a CR re-paint.   Thanks to Brian Saul and Ed K for hooking me up with this little six-axle sweetheart for a serious bargain.



From Fallen Flags we see how she appeared as a Conrail repaint in 1979; Ed was also cool enough to send me a few cab signal boxes.  I plan to weather her first and then do the paint-out.  Note too the ACI label!



The CR decals and TCS decoder are hopefully on their way as well.

Completed the station platform, which allowed me to ballast the foreground track, which allowed me to begin the scenery greenery.

This weekend, the Railroad Museum of Long Island had their 'Railroad Festival, Family Days' and once again my club was asked to participate. We brought our modules that we built last year that is a stepped up layout with 4 gauges of trains, G, O HO and N scales. We went out on Friday night and set things up and as we were leaving we were informed that the club was only going to receive 5 passes. Last year, all the members that participated got a free pass to come in and a ticket for a free lunch.

After driving 30 miles each way twice, paying to enter to donate my time and then buying lunch for my boys and me, I'm out $83. I would have been better just giving my club the $83, cause we could use it too. Oh, and after we all bought lunch, somebody comes around with 5 tickets for free lunch.

Last year we were told we were such a hit and they had done so well, we would get a cut of the proceeds, which we never did see.

I worked late last night and I am heading back to work shortly or I would have commited myself to donating more time and my money today.

Other than that, didn't have much time this week. Just started some end details for a PRR GP30 and experimented with building early (pre-'64) cab signal boxes.

Sunrise used to, but they dropped their entire line of cast metal parts.

If you've been following along at home, you've been watching the progress of this in the "Another Chopnose Underway" thread.  I still need to get some windshield wipers and touch up a few more things, but overall I'm really happy with the results.

Not much railroad progress this week. I'm working on organizing the shop area in my basement, so I'll actually have room to work on railroad stuff.

MARRS is having a module work session next Saturday, so I'm hoping to have my Kankakee River module ready to work on by then. It's only been a year or so since I did anything with it...  :

Not a lot from me. Decaled my SP C-40 caboose and installed 6 decoders for a friend. 3 x Kato F7's, Kato Mikado with Loksound, Atlas Shay and a friggin POS Graham Farish A4 Seagull (2-8-2)......I can't believe that the lower brush holder is part of the frame!!!!! Anyway I now have to wait for a DCC conversion kit from the UK.
