Worse.

Post split schemes.

The red one is an NS repaint and the and CSX looking one is a CSX paint job.

But I guess it's better than rust.

Unlike some of us, Ed hasn't had forty years to get over his favorite railroad being gobbled up. OTOH, he didn't work for it, either!  ;D ;D ;D

Wait a minute, I smell a foobie here. CR reporting marks belong to NS and NS only, why would CSX be painting a caboose that belongs to NS? Any former CR equipment belonging to CSXT is marked for NYC (or CSXT). Now, a few "shoving platforms" used in New Jersey got "CSAO" reporting marks for Conrail Shared Assets Operations but don't think that lasted very long.

...because ns didn't repaint it. Conrail did it in SAA.

The Cabooses were for Joint operations after the merger that stayed under the Conrail Name...
"SAA" stands for the Shared Assets Areas of Northern New Jersey, Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit...

Now I remember seeing a red Conrail locomotive somewhere  ;D hehehe

Under the AAR and STB rules, the reporting mark "CR" belongs to Norfolk Southern and only Norfolk Southern, so those cabooses must be the property of Norfolk Southern. If it belonged to Conrail or a predecessor road and it does not have CSXT or NYC reporting marks, the STB and the AAR say it is NS's. The so-called "SAA", or better "CSAO", technically does not exist as a railroad, all the trackage subject to that agreement is considered to be trackage of NS and trackage of CSXT, equally.

Of course, cabooses are not generally interchanged, so I guess that they can put whatever they darn well please on them. There are still cars with plain bearings, even archbar trucks, in m.o.w. service on some roads.
