I don't expect sunshine, I expect a healthy honest critique... I got one, and worked harder on the second car.  No problem on this end...  You'll also note that the frame is pretty level! ;D

The track, however, was painted about four years ago...  I suppose the traffic and the various cleaning solutions have done a number on it.  It's not in a place that's conducive to touching up with a brush, but I'll see what I can do...

Lee,

If you want to thin out that Dullcote a bit, 70% isopropyl works quite nicely without disturbing the decals.  You get a haze, of course, but another thin shot of Dullcote makes it magically disappear.  Been there, done that.

As for the quality of the kitbash, well done, sir!  Make sure you pimp that work over on the MR board...  They seem to think N scalers are the ulimate RTR crowd.  I always like to show 'em that kitbashing and scratchbuilding are scale-independent.

Well, I did set up the decal artwork in such a fashion that if you really wanted a set or 5 you could contact me off-list and we could make the necessary arrangements...  I plan to include a detailed look at the kitbash process to give you a head start there, too...

At some point it'd be cool if ya could post what the real thing looks like, it's kinda hard to judge the success or failure of a model without it.

Well last night I did a little further study, and there are some fundamental things I have to fix going forward.
1.  WM's cars all had full ladders, not the grabs on the Atlas models.  A little BLMA magic will take care of that.

2.  The little roping staples and poling pockets will have to go...  There's a little flat steel plate with a hole in it that will have to be fabricated.

3.  I have to study some pictures in the Leilich book that show the finished interior...  I'm not sure the Atlas bracing will carry over, although I personally can live with that, because any kind of bracing makes an empty car look a little more "finished."

4.  All the cars were built with friction bearing Bettendorfs, so I can keep the stock Atlas trucks.  Further investigation may reveal these to be re-fitted with roller bearings, but as long as the little lid is closed, they'll be fine.  All the photos I've found in my library show the lids on.

5.  The way I cut the first two cars, they are 2' too long.  The protos were 35'4, mine are 37'4 (inside dimension)

6.  There's some end bracing missing under the slope sheets.  Easy to add under the non-brake end, but a little more difficult to work in around the Atlas rigging.  Given the low visibility factor, these will probably remain omitted.

All of the photos I have access to are in copyrighted publications, plus my scanner is currently out of commission, at least until I get my tower back from the computer doctor...  I might be able to polock together a photo with the book open in the background...  I've done that before.

There were three classes of rebuilds... H-21, 22 and 24.  I think 23 was one of the channel side chip car conversions.



With the corrected ladders...

Are the outside dimensions correct? The inside dimension would probably be a little short due to the plastic walls not having a scale thickness.
