May-June "N-Scale"

  My May-June N-Scale arrived in the mail several weeks ago.  MR and Trains showed up yesterday.

  Can't say much about MR but Trains has a very nice little article about JT Robertson and his Make a Difference Day Express trips.  For those that haven't heard he's a 11-yr old from Cuba, NY who, for the last 2 years has been turning in pop cans and other recyclables and using the proceeds to buy tickets on the Arcade & Attica's excursion train for under-privileged children .  In 2005 he had enough for 128 fares and last October he paid 422.  It's a nice article with a few pictures. JT has a blog with which you can keep up on the latest news at makeadifferencedayexpress.blogspot.com


 I guess I should add that I grew up 3 miles from the A & A and have ridden it a number of times so the article has a special thing for me.

Just received my Trains today.  Was flipping thur it just a minute ago and read some of that article.  Also the article on PA short lines looks like it will be a good one - since I'm a native of PA.

Rather than light off a possible needless string of negativity, I'd prefer to keep my reasons for my dissapointment of the content of this issue of N Scale Magazine to myself since they are mostly personal anyway.

Warren (tracksentinel), why don't you write some articles for Pamela Clapp of N-Scale on some of your structures, like the Red Roof Inns and now the IHOP. Now that she's taken over from Hundman, she pays promptly and you'll get a lot more for an article than you will just selling the structure on eBay. Structures that were subject of an article will also bring more on eBay.

Give it a try, as all the model railroad magazines are short of decent articles and welcome new authors.

I think N Scale Railroading still pays more though.  And Tracksetinel's stuff is certainly up to par for that magazine.

That C30-7A article. Who would model that Conrail crap anyways? There must be something wrong with someone who'd be into that junk!

I had a chance to read your treatise on the 44-tonner today.  Nice write up of the process you went through to get to the finished (?) product, warts and all.  If you hadn't mentioned the minor warp resulting from the heat application, the higher than proto ride height and the lack of proper side frames, I probably wouldn't have noticed them.

I also took note that you couldn't get a standard Micro Trains coupler to work...  Did you consider using a Z scale coupler?

Short of that, do you think there's a way to polock some sort of centering spring so the MDC coupler at least functions a little better?  I'd have to imagine that unwanted uncoupling would be a problem if your hook is just flopping around.  I'm wondering if there isn't a way to use one of those little brass/bronze strips that comes in the clip of a body mounted rapido (old Atlas and Life Like pilots).

And regarding the side frames, doesn't Randy offer them?

Can't wait to see how the other two get finished as you figure out how to solve these problems...

There was no room for the 905 box, and propably no room for a centering spring as well. The coupler is screwed in so there is no vertical play which was the cause of the MDC uncoupling syndrome. The couplers do stay coupled, even through rough trackage.

The side frames were not available at the time I was writing the article.

I guess I am destined to never receive my copy of the May-June issue of N-Scale! I still have not received the original, nor the replacement copy that Pamela Clapp mailed to me on May 3rd.

Are there that many readers of N-Scale in the f**king Postal Service? And, it raised rates today. Guess higher prices justify s**ttier service.  > >
