And if you buy 101 of them...

A transaction that would have to be reported to the DHS, for sure. ;D

For those that may still be interested in the electronic fly swatter version of static applicator, Harbor Freight has a coupon for them until the 14th for $2.99.

And if you buy 101 of them, you can save an additional $30 off your $300 purchase.

Someone at Harbor Freight has to be wondering why those cheesy little gadgets are selling so well...  :D

I don't know if anyone is still paying any attention to this thread but I was able to find a strainer to finish the bug zapper version.

Here's a side-by-side between it and the 'grassinator'.  Keep in mind that I used a 8" drain pipe for the grassinator and didn't cut it down to 6" like the article suggests.

I did not make the higher power version so I could make some different comparisons as I go along.  If you don't modify the swatter board and just use the two wires that go to the paddle, the 'grassinator' is much more powerful.  The fly swatter version has a lot more fibers that lay on their side a bit.  It's actually a good contrast to the grassinator as it makes the fibers stand right on end.  The problem is that once the grass starts laying sideways, it interferes with the next strands and they start to hog pile on one another.  Maybe others have had a different experience.  I do like the open strainer for loading the grass fibers though, taking the lid off the other one each time is quite annoying.  I may try and make some sort of quick loader for it but I wouldn't go with an open strainer as the fibers would jump all over the place.

FWIW

I've been watching this post for a while and finally made it to harbor freight recently to pick up my own fly swatter. The one I picked up looks different compared to the one in the link at the beginning of this post. It uses 2 D cell batteries and the circuit board and it's components are different. This means I didn't have the option of doing an easy "high power" mod to it. That said, I believe this one is probably a high power version already. It lets out a nice POP and good size spark when grounding the dispenser to the the lead. I initially tried using an aluminum spice shaker for the dispenser but found a few problems with it so I reverted to the tea strainer and am actually much happier with the way it turned out. It was also much simpler to mount this way to. I'll try to post pics of both versions for those that may be curious.

Moving on... let me start of by saying that over the last 1.5 yrs I've spent countless hours trying to build 4 different versions of my own vandegraf generator to use for static ground cover application. It's been fun tinkering but the results were always pathetic. I just couldn't justify the cost of the Noch applicator for my small layout when I could pull parts from my junk drawer to try and make my own. I'd actually moved on with my scenery and covered most of my layout with ground foam. I am excited now to have a functioning static applicator that really only took a few minutes to build and cost a mere $10!

A couple questions:
For those of you have built these, how far away from the scenery do you hold the applicator (tea strainer in my case) to get good standing on end fibers?
How far away from the ground spike are you able to work before the fibers don't stand up effectively?

A couple observations:
I ordered silfor static grass from Scenic Express and found that the stuff is kind of compacted together straight from the package. I had better and easier application if I put some fibers in a glass jar and shook and "fluffed" them up a bit before putting it into the tea strainer.
The 4mm stuff tends to fall over easily unless you have pretty tacky glue for it to fall into. I used white glue and wetting it with water to help spread it around the scenic base only worked if the water was used very sparingly. I'm going to experiment with Matte Medium sometime soon to see what works better.

Wordy post with lots to digest but I hope someone gets some good from it all! :D

Are you sure.  I got mine from Harbor Freight too and it didn't look exactly like the one in the link.  You just need to read the text where it say to jumper over the resistor that's in series with the capacitor and remove the resistor that is parallel with the capacitor.  I was able to make those mods even though it isn't the exact same board.

After I did that to mine and it did give a better 'zap'. I haven't tried using with grass yet.

I opened mine up yesterday. It is slightly different as well. I cut out the resistor parallel with the capacitor and jumped the resistor next to the resistor.

I don't have a strainer (or batteries) yet.

Was gonna try the salt shaker idea.

Hello Guys,

Thought I'd bump this thread up seeing as I finished and tested my static grass applicator yesterday. I built the high powered version, and it worked great, for about 5 minutes. I charge and discharged the cap just as the article stated, but after a few cycles something changed. Now when I press the button I don't hear the cap charging up the way it did the first few times I charged it. Also, it won't retain it's charge after I release the button. Any ideas what could be wrong?

The good thing is I only spent $3.99 on it, so not much lost there. HF sells them for $7.99 on their website, but I just called my local store and found out they are on sale again for $2.99. So, I will pick up two or four of them and try it again!!!
