Service suspended on the N scale PRR

All service on the N scale Pennsylvania Railroad Middle Division has been suspended until further notice.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause our freight customers and the traveling public.

On 21 April 2008, the last trains to traverse the N scale PRR consisted of eastbound Altoona to Enola local M16 and westbound TrucTrain TT1.  After that all power, control, and signal control systems were disconnected.

In answer to the rumors that this service suspension is related to recent sightings of Penn Central and Conrail equipment, the management replies with an emphatic "no."

...I'll be putting my house on the market May 1st in preperation for my move this summer to Nebraska on Air Force orders.  As such, having the layout set up not only makes the bonus room look smaller, but also invites sticky fingers to mess with things I don't want messed with.

So this weekend the layout is going out to the garage where it will be entombed in its plywood crate, to await its re-awakening sometime late this summer in the Omaha area (hopefully in the basement of a nice house).

I'm sad, of course, but at least I know the layout isn't headed for the dumpster.

As a bonus, I'm planning on writing an article about how the move goes (assuming it goes as well as last time) for one of the N scale pubs.  So I'm photo-documenting the process.  I figure I'm not the only guy who moves a lot and who has a portable layout.

So long for now, Pennsy...  We'll see you again soon!

If you need the M1 to have a temporary home, I have room on the N&W!  Seriuosly, pack carefully and for the long term.  My stuff laid in waiting for several years before I had the time to get back to them.

Omaha??? Say "Hey" to Warren Buffet(yeah, getting in his compound would be harder than robbing Fort Knox). At least the AF didn't banish you to Minot, ND! I went to RADAR school at Minot AFB....it might not be the end of the earth, but you can see it from there! Finding a basement in Omaha might be a challenge. They've got "fraidy holes"(storm shelters) 'cause they get some tornados up that way too, but I think basements are like in KS, OK, and TX....not that common. ???

Having recently looked for a home in the Lincoln/Omaha area last year when I moved up here, I can tell you that you'd have a hell of a time finding a house that DIDN'T have a basement around here.  Every single home I looked at either in person (which was over 60) and every listing I looked at (easily over 1000) all had basements.  I'm sure houses without them exist, but you'd have to actually try to get one without one.

And I've never seen a storm shelter around here -- outside of the basements themselves anyway.  While tornadoes are hugely common in the surrounding areas, Omaha has only been hit by tornadoes a couple times in the last century and Lincoln has never been hit by one ever.

Yeah, the only houses around Bellevue, NE without basements are base housing.  Considering I would have to give up my housing allowance to live in those tiny shacks they call FGO housing, I'll rent off-base, thank you very much!

I just don't want to buy right now with the housing market in the toilet.  I know it's a buyer's market, but I could get orders in as little as two years, and then be stuck selling in a market that may suck even more than now.

When you get settled look me up.  I am a GS/USN reservist at USSTRATCOM, will be in the STRATCOM phone book.  I am currenttly planning a Modern CGW (no CNW Merge) layout.  There is also a yahoo group for Omaha Model RR folks.  They have a kind of rotating work session set-up, and a couple of the layouts are in the Papillion, Belluve area.  I live in Papillion as well.  I think better location than Bellvue and only takes about 15 minutes to get to the base.  And almost all the house I know have basements.
