Weekend Update - 30 March 2008

Nice of you guys to go wire-up the layout for the guy with cancer. Pancreatic cancer is supposed to be one of the most painful ways you can go. At some point, they usually put a morphine pump in your spine, and you hit a button when the pain gets too bad.....not pleasent at all. Me, I hope I just go to sleep and don't wake-up. Better it happen tomorrow that way than some ways I've seen people have to die.

It's actually worse than that.   :-[

As with pacreatitis; the painkillers, morphine included, often inflame the pacreas more.  So the drugs to numb the incredible pain, actually increase it immensely.

Nothing to show for me. Just working on MANY new item artworks for Louisville and Anaheim. Should start building them soon and will have plenty to show then.

While not visually stimulating, your new product teasers always lead to good news, Bob.

BTW, KB, helluva nice thing of you to do. Kudos! I helped take care of a dear friend's Mother who was dying of colon cancer, and it's the very little things that come to matter.

Scott Teague told us of a guy with terminal lung and pancreatic cancer that was asking for help to get his trains running before he died. He had some work done, but with a single feeder wire.

Yesterday, several of us went to his house and finished laying his HO track and wiring it so he could play before his time is up.

Chuck as far as I know he has most of what he needs. Couple of engines, some rolling stock, a few buildings. What he had made so far was a small town area, an Army base, and an area meant for mountains, I guess. Some landscaping would be nice, but that's hard to "send". I am probably going to talk to Scott about going back in a couple of weeks. We have a show this coming weekend. I'd go sooner, but it's a 2 hour drive there.

I can tell you he is a Vietnam vet, LRRPs, and I think the last of his six-man team. He mentioned how his records were sealed and how much trouble it was to get them opened for review of his disability status. Said it took a Senator and someone else.

What you guys did was absolutely a stand-up act of kindness that will hopefully be returned ten-fold someday, but damn, I feel so bad for that guy.  Good men like him seem to be fading away.  I appreciate all our vets and the courage they exhibit, but I hold a special place in my heart for Vietnam vets like the one you have helped.  I listen to stories from my dad and uncle and other vets their age and it reminds me of what makes our country the greatest on earth.

Anyway, work and the wife kept me busy most of the weekend.  All I did was paint some earthy brown onto the base layer of foam on my door layout to get rid of the bright blue.

I finally finished ballasting:

You'll notice the strange transition from grey to black ballast along the mainline in the hill area. I was trying to recreate something I saw in a photo which involved black ballast, although by then I had already begun using grey on the rest of the layout. Oh well, this is just an experimental layout anyway, so bits of weirdness like that don't bother me.
