Wrong trucks on FVM boxcars?

The FVM double door boxcars I have come with MT short roller bearing trucks.  I'm pretty sure that they should be medium barber roller bearing trucks.  Right?

Do the couplers not stick out far enough?  Short ad Medium only refers to the draft gear, not the type of sideframe.

I should be clear: there are two problems I think.

1.  The couplers are partially under the coupler walkways.  This is problematic when the car is lowered and the top of the MT trip pin catches the walkway.  The prototypes I've seen have extended draft gear, too.
2.  The sideframes should have three visible springs, not two.

OK, Barber Roller Bearing trucks are 100 ton(three springs). The medium exstension coupler is meant to represent a cushion underframe draft gear, unless you need the length for clearence either for details on the end of a car or sharp radii curves. Does that help? We're talking 1035's and 1037's here. Don't ask me the new numbers...I can't remember them.

MT doesn't make a 100T truck...

Why would you put a 100-ton truck under a boxcar?
Modeling (or attempting to model) the Central Vermont circa October 1954  . . .

Who me?  No, I wouldn't.  I'm using what MT calls the "Barber Roller Bearing with Medium Extension Couplers".

Because it is a 100-ton capacity boxcar. There are such things, MP and KCS had them to haul synthetic rubber out of Baton Rouge and Lake Charles, LA.

Understood, but someone said earlier that the "3 springs makes this a 100-ton truck" which isn't necessarily the case - the number of visible springs (Actually there are more springs on the real truck - you just can't see them from the side) does not indicate the truck, and therefore load, capacity.

Wow This is opening a can of worms. it would have to depend on the specific freight car, since even the MT "Barber" truck could be incorrect for the car. (I'm pretty sure the MT "Barber" is a Barber type S-2-C, 100 ton capacity. However it seems undersized)

A 50' XM / XL Boxcar could have trucks made by ASF, Dofasco, Dresser, Scullin, RDI, or Standard Car Truck Co. (Barber) among others. Each company had a distinct "look" to it with different side frames, Spring arrangements and Hardware, the trucks can have even more variation with shop crews swapping parts / rebuilding the trucks, so you can have two identical Barber S2's that look quite different.

This is where HO has us beat, the selection of trucks available beats N scale by ten fold, however the is some good selection in N Athearn makes a good representation of a ASF "Ride Control" truck, Atlas & Intermountain make 70t & 100T trucks, & MT makes their Barber & roller bearing trucks (the latter looking like another ASF variation).

So whether or not the Fox Valley car have the wrong trucks depends on how far your willing to go.

What I meant, is the three visible springs is supposed to represent a 100 ton truck. Exactly correct trucks in N-scale represent the "two inch rule". From two feet it's hard to see pizza cutters. Except in close-up photos, it's darn hard to see what kind of trucks are under an N-scale car. Sometimes it's hard to see missing wheelsets. :o

>MT doesn't make a 100T truck...

Gee, that looks like a 100T truck to me, though as marketted by MT they are actually 70T trucks since they use the 33" wheels instead of the more accurate 36".
