Are Athearn's HO locos this bad?

No, in fact, they are awesome.  I have a Tunnel Motor, 2 CF7s, and a MP15ac.

Until someone makes one with an 88" nose, corrugated radiator grilles, and flexicoil trucks, my needs are not met. As far as I'm concerned, Atlas is the only game in town for these. Kato doesn't want to paint an SD-anything in any color belonging to a railroad that ran east of Biloxi, Mississippi, and the thought of an Intermountain SD40-2 is about a 9.6 on the pucker-factor. If they really did make one, I am fully prepared to take a road-trip to Longmont and drop a flaming bag of poo on their doorstep, with a note signed:

The SD40-2 has a longer frame than the SD40.

The SD40 uses the same frame as the SD45.
The SD40-2 uses the same frame as the SD45-2.

Chris, in N Kato cheated the old -2 and 40/45 used the same mechanism, except that the -2 had trucks with offset pivot points making up the extra length.

NO ! - SD40/45 and SD40-2 do not share the same mechanism - they are different !
(yes, both DCC ready but different)

Make sure you do it on a day when I'm upwind.  I live 1/4 mile from the manufacturing building.  Better yet, drop it off at the main office on 9th Street.  I can tell you who to address it to.  ;)

My other big complaint with the Kato SD40-2 is that the only way to get them to close couple seems to be the Kato coupler. The MT "solutions" are long and longer. ::)

(it was Steve4 that educated me on this)

...For example, the recent spate of lease units would sell really well....

I agree.  I'd be willing to buy several in leaser schemes.

Well, I model 21st century Tehachapi so I'm smack in the bullseye of Kato's marketing target: UP SD70M's, AC4400's, BNSF -2's, so I consider myself lucky.  (But no BNSF Dash-9 for 7 years now - might be tempted by Steve4's latest beast.)

Since most (but not all) of the complaints seem to be about availability rather than quality, I wonder if it's conceivable that they would take a commission for a certain run?    I'm sure they wouldn't generate new tooling for such, but is there an SD40 or SD40-2 configuration they've already done that they could release in undec if they had a guaranteed order?  (Probably not...)

-Gary

I just happened to be looking at the Micro Trains web site, and I noticed that they will be doing an SD40-2 in Z scale.  It would be nice if they did it in N scale.  Seems that they have given up on N scale locomotives after one attempt with the FT.  They are pretty nice, and I don't know why they have not tried to produce additional locomotives.  Thanks.

There is a note over on Trainboard which says IMRC is DEFINITELY NOT doing SD40-2's...

Maybe Atlas will save the day???

It's sort of a relief that IM isn't doing them. ;D

Pray for a miracle! Atlas is the one to do this.

There is huge demand for the SD40-2. Kato isn't giving us what we want. It's time for Atlas to step in and deliver us from our suffering!
