shortline NW-2s?

I don't know why I own it, but I have an extra Kato NW-2 that I would like to paint up as a heavily rusted/faded/weathered shortline or steel mill scheme.  Do you recall coming across a photo on the web that would work?

You'll have to consult with the experts to see if this is an NW-2, but I always liked the look of the Canton's switchers...

I'll assume the phase doesn't matter as long as it has the stepped hood i.e. no phase V's?

Nope, those Canton switchers aren't SW-1s. They're probably 600s or 900s. They've got the full size SW9/1200 carbody, but with only one stack, making them 6-cylinder models. They also have full-height radiators ruling out SW-1/NW-2s.

Also they have the twin sealed beam headlight assemblies and rectangular (vs arched ) windows. While these things could change over time, they're often good for supporting evidence.

I'm also interested in this, as I have a Chessie NW2 to strip, repaint, and batter. The Union RR out in Pittsburgh had some NW2s, but I don't have any photos of them in shabby shape.

That one is actually URR, and I'm surprised at the condition the paint is in. Usually that bright green faded to a really unpleasant, horrendous shade...

Although I don't believe these to be NW2s, these were near and dear to me for the two years I worked at Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore when it was still Bethlehem Steel. The PB&R had quite the operation with various switchers and slugs. I wish I could get back into the plant to wander around again.

These could almost fit the bill as both shortline and steel mill, Tom.
