Ed do you have any pics on your website of the new project. Also I have some keen ways to make scrap iron and metal.

Ok, Jason, you need the fixed end gondola with cover from MTL, which has 14 panels instead of 15.  Eureka moment #2.

Yeah, I got 'em all sitting out and none are the correct end.  The PS end on the MT box cars look like the right fit and it 's a breeze to saw off and sand down to flat.

I wanted to try and convert my Concor 2-10-2to a B&M S-1 (sold some to MEC) but, there were too many compromises to make a near scale copy (frame fits right into the cab and is 10 feet too long) so, I did as much detailing as I could with what I had.  It came out kinda MEC-ish and I'm happy.  I'll tackle that rear truck someday and convert it to inside bearing.

Ed , that scrap yard siding looks just the way it should . Are you air brushing and grounds near the tracks the ballast to get those effects ?

Nope, it's just good brown dirt. I wish the grains were finer, it looks too "gravely" for me right now, but that's something I've found with almost all dirt. I think I just need a finer sifter.

Well, that or I should just use drywall mud and paint it. Hmm...

Too bad we can't use somerhing like brown sugar . What about died while its wet joint compound , then let dry , then sand it to death , or blender it to smithereenes . Then you could sift it on , and spritz it with a water in a sprayer .

Here's a roster shot.


These are most of my locos.  On the left track are 3 Atlas GP9s and 2 IMRC F7s.  To the right, 2 Atlas SD7s and two Kato F3s.  Further to the right 3 IMRC F7s.  Furthest to the right my IMRC FTA/B set that I kitbashed with angled number boards from an IMRC F3 A unit shell and then custom painted and decaled (before IMRC did this scheme on the FT).  Not pictured is an Atlas GP7, two CB&Q F3 and a Life-Like 2-8-4 Berkshire (which is for sale by the way).

This week's progress has been slowed by a very painful back (2 herniated discs). I finally got in to Physical Therapy Wed. and am making some improvement. I did manage to make my first staging "yard" this week. It has 16 tracks, the longest just under 12 feet and the shortest around 8 feet. There will be a mirror yard on the other end.

I also found out that I didn't have as much rolling stock as I envisioned.

John, the SDs look great!  Did you use an airbrush or wash on the hoods?

Neither.   I used Bragdon Enterprises weathering chalks.

Yes, I'm doing a P-t-P and didn't see the need for any of the usual yard tracks. There will be a similar "yard" at the other end with a 28 foot version of the NS Spencer Yard in the middle. That's where all the movements will be.

Heck, that gives you an excuse to have a whole bunch of old equipment, just model the museum!  Of course you'll need the Little Choo-Choo across the street.

Ed - nice stuff...Here's a a scrap yard I built for my boy's layout in Allentown:

For the junk - I take every weird scrap I can find and glue them into piles and spray flat rust, shoot some gray and black primer and more rust. For old sheet metal, use foil from candy wrappers.



I fired this scene, it's now a team track.
