Prototype for a REALLY poor paint job!

I think you could duplicate this with a can of Krylon spray-on texture paint, a can of Floquil hopper car gray, dip in water while the paint is still wet and then a quick overspray of Testors flat gull gray???

That car has a layer of insulation on the outside, hence the mottled appearance.

And a lot of it is flaking off...

I've seen this on the bottom of some 33k gallon tank cars too...

Weather a car according to the picture, put it up on e-bay and watch what people will say about your masterpiece under the topic title: "No bids ... wonder why".

These car were for Idaho vegetables. The insulation was too keep them from freezing in the cold temperatures. A number of the cars were in assigned service to Old Dutch hauling spuds.

Santa Fe had Identical cars, & Pensy had some of there ore cars (the ones bob is making) coated with the same insulation for an experiment to keep ore from freezing in the cars (not sure how much it helped ???) 

Now here's my question I'd love to have a few NP cars... How would I go about reproducing this effect in N scale? Any ideas?

One possibility is the stuff I mentioned in the opening comment - Krylon has a "texture spray" that will leave something that looks JUST like that finish...  It comes in several colors, but I'd find something light, sand it, seal it and then put a real coat of paint over it...

Just do it before assembling the car, you want to keep it off the walkways, hatches, end ladders and smaller detail bits.
