I feel a project coming on...

Yesterday Ed and I spent some time wandering around York, PA, where his first love, the Northern Central line of the PRR/PC/Conrail intersects my old flame, the Western Maryland.  We poked around the old WM freight house, and found that nature has been gradually reclaiming the site...  Here it is photographed in the spring by Dwight Varnes...

My hope was to pull some general measurements, but aside from neglecting to bring my tape measure, we also found that time and the elements have taken their toll over the last 9 months...

The good news is I was able to photograph some of the interior and structural elements, which will be helpful in developing scale plans to build a model of this interesting building.

The 4x8 sheets of plywood were helpful in scaling the photograph to arrive at general dimensions for the building.  The exposed roof framing also helps with understanding how this building was put together... and explains a lot about why it's falling down...

Anyway, I took all this information, and started working on the framing plan using my zippy design program, Chief Architect.  Here's what I've come up with so far...

This will likely turn into a modular display of the OneTrack variety, or it may lead me to pull a Berger and break out the chain saw and start over...  We shall see.  Stay tuned for further developments...

I've been drawing a lot of the surviving Atlantic and East Carolina buildings recently.  Lauren and I go out, sketch and measure, and come back.  Then I go to the school, fire up Autocad, and knock out the building, usually in an afternoon.
Thanks much,
