On30 0-4-0 gas mechanical, Part II

I built one of these a couple years back with a Backwoods Miniatures dress-up kit, then I sold it one E-bay. Well now Tom has used his evil mind control ray to tempt me into making another. The Bachmann On30 model is called a "Davenport" and it does sort-a look like one, but I think Bachmann did their usual twist to add make believe features. Still it is a nice locomotive, but a bit freelance. This is the closest prototype I can find to a match:

This locomotive along with a bunch of other small steam & diesel critters ran at a limestone quarry about 15 miles from me. The limestone was used to make steel in Youngstown:

The above Davenport was 38" gauge, they also had standard gauge lines. So the local connection helps get me excited about this even though I'm not doing a 100% prototypical model.

So far I removed the side frames and made new ones that have a see-thru look like some of the real ones:

I had to hog out some metal to leave "space" behind the new frame:

You guys are driving me crazy.  I'd love to tear up some locos, but don't have the funding right now.  The Bachdude line of On30 is such a great starting point for a lot of projects, at a good price.  I just can't swing it.

If you keep throwing these projects around, I'll have to dig into my existing stock.  You'll see titles such as "Kato vs Dremel", "Life-Like Chainsaw Masacre", "Atlas versus the Volcano", "SD40-2: An Alco Runs Through It", and "Flight of the Con-Cor".

I have to give it to Bachmann: they were pretty close to prototype for their rendition of a small Davenport, comparing it with this picture of a 10-ton Davenport 50cm gauge diesel-mechanical built for a sugar plantation in Puerto Rico in Feb, 1945. You are not the only one saying there was no such locomotive built by this company but I am almost certain this is the locomotive Bachmann modeled.  Builder's number was 2716 and was powered by a Cum. HB6 engine. The only thing I see that Bachmann got wrong was the brackets for the horizontal handrail sticking into the radiator grille. The two supports should be on either side of the grille, and is faintly shown in the picture. As for the Carbon Limestone locomotive No. D-8 you pictured, I have owned it now for over 29 years.

I love this little model and would like to get another one some day.  I still have Chris333's dress up kit waiting around...

Thanks for finding the prototype, AL 4105.  I actually wouldn't mind getting some sugar cane cars and make a neat little layout/diorama.

Most of the locos. at Carbon Limestone wound up being scrapped but a few survive. The 38 inch gauge was what did them in as far as sales, I'd say. I will see if I can find a shot of mine and post it later on.

Edit: the real D-8 was built in August 1947 for Western Construction Co. as 36" gauge, Davenport number 3104. Was Carbons only used locomotive, it was converted to 38" gauge. At Carbon Limestone it was used to pull a supply train and would take the explosives out to the quarry.

And if you own it now you must be Alton Underwood in Nashville TN ?

Yep. Yours truly. It was sort of funny: the CL Co broke the nameplate (link'n pin coupling accident?) and had a wooden plate that said "Doodlebug" on it when it arrived (which I vowed to replace ASAP). I lucked out and bought one from an Underwood Sand and Gravel Company in Hattiesburg, MS who had a junked Davenport 12 ton diesel electric still around, so it came from one Underwood to another.
