Electronic help (again)

OK back when I built this On30 0-4-0:

I had plans to add this very simple sound system to it:

All it does is make a staticy rumble sound that sounds like a motor running (the 0-4-0 is gas-mechanical)
I built the circuit without the right side (Lights) and it worked, but the sound was very quiet. The locomotive running drowned out the sound, and this is not a loud running locomotive.

Well Tom has got me itching to buy one again (hey only $40) and I want sound.

Does anyone know how I can make this circuit louder?

The speaker is a 8 ohm, .87", 1.1watt Kobitone.

I just dug out the old circuit I built and see it does have the light parts on it. Do I need the bridge rectifier and if I'm not using lights?

Will a different speaker alone make it louder? If so what speaker should I get? it needs to be the same size to fit behind the radiator grill.

How much space do you have?  Probably the only way to make it louder is with an amp.  They make Analog IC amplifiers that are, if I remember correctly, the same size as a 555.

Do you have any more info on this? Where to purchase? How a moron (me) can install it? Does it run off of the track power or will it need a battery?

I can't find the old speaker so testing will have to wait till a new one shows up.

Just checking, but your test speaker is in an enclosure of some sort?  It will be very quiet if it's not...

Back then no it didn't have a box. I will try that, but knowing larger speakers, I don't see how a speaker that has a sealed back would sound different in a box. I will try it though.
