interesting way to make train shells?

I just happened on this website after talking to a buddy who is a finescale modeller.

http://www.printapart.com/applications/scalemodeling.html

Interesting concept for those one off loco shells if you can use 3D modelling software / CAD packages.

I'm sorely tempted if the prices are reasonable

Anyone try this ?

Too bad none of the examples are better photos. If the "printer" is a very high res, then I'd bet these parts are kind of expensive to have made.

My CAD program has 3D on it, I also have a 3D only program. Don't know how to use either of them... :-\

I put some work into a NE-5 caboose shell that would drop onto an Atlas floor and reuse the handrails and roofwalks.  I stopped after I got into the pricing.  I might have even paid the price since I need this model, but without even getting one test sample to make sure every fits, I would have had to double my investment unless I got everything perfect the first time.

I also have an early H44-10 thats close to complete.  Hopefully, in a few years, I can return to these projects when they are more affordable.

Is this a different way than Mark4Design makes their shells. It would be nice to find a possibility to make unique models or parts, like the GP9/GP7 low nose cabs I asked so many times but nobody wants to do since there hundered different designs out there.

frankly speaking, there are a lot of people on all the fora demanding stuff they really urgently need and they always boast how many they will buy if such and such product would finally be available and as soon as the product is released they become silent. they wont buy because they will find 1000s of excuses why not (I'm not talking about you Roland - I know you buy...) there is a lot of time involved (3D graphics) until a product is ready to be built and if you don't sell the stuff, then there are beter ways to waste your time...   ;)

Are there any other railroaders other that Mark4Design with access to RP equipment?  I have the time to make the drawings, but won't pony up the full load a cash it would take without "friendly" rates.  I've talked with Mark about my projects and it's still too much (weak US dollar?) unless I use the prototype to make a mold and can sell a decent quantity.

I doubt you could compare the process these guys use with Marks state of the art machine. I've completed a few of Marks GP39-2's and have a half done GP50 awaiting a mech and some decalling. I have 2 SD39's to do then I need to force Mark to take my money  ;D for more. (sd38's)

I was sort of interested if it didn't cost too much to do odd bits and pieces for kitbashing shells but it sounds like it could be expensive.
If the cost was relative it really wouldn't matter (at least to me anyway).

I would always take a M4D shell over anyone else's any day - they are amazing. 8)

Looking good Bob!!!
