How would a prototype wood boxcar be painted on the inside?

It wouldn't. Up until around 1970, boxcars were lined with wood planking. It was never painted, as the paint might rub off on the lading. Besides, shippers nailed strapping to it to restrain the load. I seem to recall that the wood was varnished, though.
