Weekend update - July 22, 2007

For some of the posts on here, I see at least a few folks have been busy. I was really quite plesantly surprised this week when, on a whim, I decided to see if my thirty-odd year old PRR L1s made from an Atlas-Rivarossi light USRA Mikado still ran. Since it would not negotiate the curves on my 2 by 4 ft. layout, it had been stored for the past 28 years, at least. Put it on the track, nothing. Took it off, removed the boiler shell and turned the universal - it squeaked. So, a little LaBelle oil on the brass gears, and a tiny amount of the motor bearing, two revolutions of the drivers by hand, then back on the track. It ran!!! Put the boiler shell back on it, and coupled it to a 15 car freight. It pulled it!! It is somewhat noisy and "jackrabbity", so I may contact the Motorman about a better motor and add all wheel tender pickup. I could hardly believe the wheels and contacts still passed current after 28 years. Bet if I cleaned them it'd run smoother.

Also, painted the latches and positioned the hatches in the ventilator position on the three MTL reefers I bought for $7.00 each at the Pensacola train show. And "wasted" yesterday going to the Tallahassee train show. Unlike the Dothan show, this one is going steadily downhill, and the organizer knows it, blaming it on the club's Board of Directors.

Everything is ready for the trip to Detroit so I thought I would blow off some steam this week. Here are the results of my playing around.

Not a lot for me this week......most of the family down with the flu. I did install 6 decoders for a friend of mine and 2 for myself. I also started on the new coal load for my Challenger. My new camera arrived (Fuji Finepix 6500FD) so I've been having a lot of fun with that over the weekend.

I've done a bunch of random stuff. I've been making progress on building and installing my bridge, and then today I went and investigated a potential oNeTRAK module: Freeland MD.

Not a lot for me ..

1. Set up a Dell Laptop to dual boot CentOs5 and Vista .. (Centos is the 1st on the Grub loader list)
2. Got CentOs to work with ndiswrapper and the dell wireless card
3. Shampooed all the carpets
4. Cut the grass
5. Installed the last of the track to complete the lower level .. I can now roundy round a whole train on the lower level
