Here's a couple goodies from my weekend excursions...

My WM F-units paid a visit to Ed Kapuscinski's layout, plus,

I got to play Back to the Future on Jerry Britton's PRR layout during my visit there.  Of course, when is PC not PC?  When it's displayed on a PRR foamer's layout!!

It was a delight to visit both of these layouts this weekend.  I was going to try to squeeze in a stop on the Maryland and Ohio, but time got away from me.

Thanks to both of my gracious hosts...

Jerry, and

Ed.

I also got to meet Max Magliaro at Railfest in Altoona, which was a real treat as well.  More on that later...

A little behind here, but none the less...

I spent the weekend speed matching a pair of GP40-2's that have a DA120 decoder and a DN164 series decoder. It was a a lot of work and I think I fried another decoder in the process but it was nice to finally get these 2 units running together.  I also spent a bit of time working on prepping some engine terminal details and had my first ever guest run some trains on my layout! Sorry, no pics, but it's been a fun week!

I think the smallest N scale pilot wheels are a bigger diameter than the Z wheels .

Check the pilot and tender wheel of the Bachmann 4-4-0's. They're both pretty durn small.

Wow 3rdRail you are correct . I will have to think these magnetic carriages over again .

Z wheels solid plastic .151
Bachmann 4-4-0 pilot plastic wheels metal axle .115
Bachmann 4-4-0 tender nickel wheels with a loose 1/2 axle .125

Flanges and treads large on the Bachmann's
I like the looks of the nickel but I need to axle them and insulate one side or use plastic for the axle
On the other hand , the pilot wheels are good to go .

Thanks for the info , maybe I will get this to actually be a runner .

No N scale work for me this week -- spent the weekend at my sister-in-law's in St Louis.  I managed to sneak away to the Museum of Transportation for a few hours.  I'll post some pics in the Proto folder.

Steve

It’s a Green Max (Japan) kit; their part/kit code is GMX38. Its a nice kit and there is a lot of additional detail parts you dont see in my 2 photos.

They occasionally pop up on eBay or if you are adventurous you can get them from Japanese suppliers.  There is also a kit number 37 that is about half size but comes with 'add-ons' (Tank and pipe kit smokestacks etc.) I will post photos below. You can get the add-on's separately as well, but can be hard to find at times.

DC-2 update

Well thanks to 3rdrails suggestion about trying the Bachmann 4-4-0 tender or pilot wheels I now have a chassis that can traverse a Kato double crossover in all directions forward and reverse without derailing . I used the metal tender wheels with 1/16 brass axles . The ACC used to attach the wheels is what insulates each wheel from the axle . I get some intermittent broken conductive jerkiness going through the crossover , but I can work that out with weight and cleaning . All the wheels now roll freely enough , with a little wobble here and there , the price I pay for enough slop to not jam on the crossover and curves . Its a hoot to see those 20 wheels stay on the rails while going through that crossover . Thanks again 3rdrail , your idea really panned out for me .

Bobcat you were thinking of this as well , Thank you .
