One thing I like about the LL locos is the hand rails, they look much more to scale than atlas & kato. Its the same deal with the GP38-2.

Yes, I agree with this.  The 38-2 handrails look awesome.

Tom are you sure there is a difference between the handrails of LL and Atlas on the GP38-2 ?  Just wondering .  ???

Yes, as it happens, it's a nearly perfect fit. The only thing you'd need to do is remove the metal dimples from the LL chassis. Or, carve new recesses for them in the Atlas shell. (However, the LL shell will not fit the Atlas chassis.)

Hopefully the availability of a DCC drive will encourage Atlas to do the same with the RS-3 to fend off all this swapping.

I disagree.  Even though I can't use this loco, I hope sales are good enough to spark more interest in new releases from LL/Walthers.  I've been really impressed with Walther's continued increase in attention to N scale.  I really appreciate that they're re-running the structure kits that have been retired for a while.  I hate when asshats on ebay sell Mountain Lumber Company for $80.00 plus.  Did anyone notice that the blast furnace kit is on sale for $79.99?  That's $50.00 off list!

All NYC RS-2s were scrapped, sold, or retired by 11/1967.
If there were any Penn Central RS-2s, they weren't from NYC.
Plenty of RS-3s survived though.

That late 50's early 60's oldie " You Can't Sit Down " comes to mind . Maybe that why Atlas has excelled so well , it keeps them on their feet .

I have no way to measure to be sure, but yes, they appear to be thinner.
