I am an idiot with computer programs so I wouldn't have a clue how to do it...

Dude... Don't you use AutoCAD?

Oh, and check to see if your scanner has a Descreening Filter. That usually does the trick with book and magazine scans...

Really
the only way to capture hand painted lettering is to follow it with a vector ptogram.  Modern typefonts are just too accurate and rigid to replace the artistry...

Work in progrees while I waited for a system backup...

I do use autoCAD, but so far I don't see that Adobe is anything like it.  I could insert that photo into CAD and trace it then fill with solid hatch, but each letter would need to been drawn out separately. I though it would be quicker to alter the photo.

I'm learning.

My scanner setting are minimal and now that I have Vista it's a big run around just to make a scan. I just use the Camera and Scanner Wizard. I did have a much nicer scanner, but the last computer didn't have a serial port so I had to toss it.

Tivo, That sign looks great!

Open up Photoshop, go to File, select Import, and you should be able to access your flatbed scanner directly.

I only said that because you said "I am an idiot with computer programs so I wouldn't have a clue how to do it...". Last time I checked, AutoCAD wasn't exactly an "idiot's" program...  8)

Thanks guys!

I think one of these will work just fine. I'm printing them all out to see how they look, then I will print on matte photo paper.
