Doug,Railroading is much more than locos. You cannot begin to imagine how much more variety there was in rolling stock back in lets say the 1960s. Most modern trains frankly bore the heck out of me. I still enjoy them but to a much lesser degree.

Cars like covered hoppers were just starting, centrebeam flatcars, coil steel cars, the larger 60' and 86' boxcars for stamped auto body parts, any form of container car were also just starting to appear or still in the future. There aren't really any more specialized cars the farther back you go.

Sorry, but case not closed. You say "YOU" enjoy...well, that's the key. It is likely only because that's what you remember from your "glory days" and that is why you think it is somehow superior. And it's kinda no surprise that the guys that blast modern railroading are fans of long-ago defunct railroads.I wasn't around for the 60's but I vividly remember railroading in the mid-70's and from my perspective the year 2000 had exponentially more variety of both paint schemes AND freight cars. "Not even close".
