Faded paint on a Golden West Service boxcar

I recently purchase two Athearn Genesis Golden West Service (GVSR) box cars.  The paint on the model is dark blue.
On the boxcars that I have seen, the paint is faded to a light blue.  When I try to get the same effect using chalks and dullcote, I just get a light shade of the model blue which is not realistic.

Any ideas on how to get the correct colour for the faded look?

I'm not sure about this, but on modeltrainsweathered.com, "Darth Aggro" has a technique using Dullcote and alcohol. If you go on the site and look up all post by "Darth Aggro" I think you will find the answer. I hope this works for you.

You can just airbrush light coats of Polly Scale "Dust" onto the model, which will make the paint look faded.

I have one of these Genesis cars too and it has been sitting in the box for at least 3 years as I have been afraid to touch it.  :-[ (I know, that's probably the worst mistake of all!).

Jeff, may I ask, what exactly do you use for your washes?  I've heard that some folks use stuff like windshield wash, alcohol (70% & 91%), glass cleaners, etc....  Regardless, some cars seem to want to repel water-based washes, even tho I've very carefully washed & rinsed them with soap & water.  :-[

I like a light airbrush misting of reefer white/earth mixed to a light tan color.
