It would be a good loco to give your 7 year old nephew.  Get a couple, put decoders in them, and when the little brat comes over, let him run them at a million miles an hour.

They look like crap, but their heavy pullers and virtually bullet proof.

The flexing wires soldered to pivotting trucks was, in fact, the weak point of these things.

Other than that, considering the price and the time, they were pretty good power.  They ran allright, but at the time, they were considered very good runners.  It is important to remember that when these appeared, only Kato had the type of power chassis that has now become the standard.  Kato was considered the El Expensivo manufacturer, back then.

LL did keep the same chassis, but both the BL-2 and the FA-2 did have shells much improved over the ol' FP-Whatever.

These things make good cheater boxcars. The locomotive will pull every piece of rolling stock that you own up a fifty per-cent grade on a seven inch curve.

Also C424's being closed out for $40...

Heard from my LHS that Bev-Bel is closing down and blowing out stock.  I've been told to expect lots of cheap choo-choos in the coming weeks.

A couple of years ago I bought a couple dirt cheap Bev-Bel train sets for the locomotives. I intended to make some powered box cars to add some oomph to my steam powered trains. As luck would have it, neither diesel ran out of the box. While I have the skills to deal with such things, I feel sorry for some poor kid that might have gotten one of those sets as a present.

FYI Micro Mark still has Bachmann 2-8-0's for $67.50.  These are the new DCC ready ones, too.

The Favorite guy on eBay regularly sells them around $40 or so - brand new. All this guy does in Bachmann. Sharks, Mountains, even the odd 2-6-6-2.
