cr6841!

Wow, EXCELLENT tips! I'll consider everything including the "thick CA"
glue. Mine seems thin. My goal is to save some of the original paint job
so I won't be priming the whole thing. This could get a bit tricky.
Weathering will hide a lot because it's a fairly messy prototype. Again,
I appreciate the timely response because I can actually incorporate some
of these steps into the project. I'm just getting started.

Do you think each model manufacturer actually tried to duplicate a specific covered hopper OR do you think some versions are accurate while some versions are half-accurate and still others are just bogus?

You hit it absolutely right. Some try to get it right, others try a "one size fits all" approach and yet others use their imaginations excessively. Athearn is noted for the last.

Of course, some of us kitbashers and scratchbuilders are guilty as well.  :-[  I've been known to build a car to use leftover parts...  :-\

The ACF book was published by Signature Press and written by Ed Kaminski. Ed ought to know the subject, he is Sales Manager for ACF! It is a great book if you're really interested in freight cars.

He's writing one on billboard reefers. I'll be buying that one!

With the ACF hoppers from 1966 to 1968 there are 5 types that I have
been able too find pictures of.

Hummerdave is being helpful behind the scenes trying to get me to try
some "upgraded" parts to make this a real model. I'm not sure how far
I'll go with THIS project but I do want to learn how to add metal
roofwalks, brakelines, correct steps, etc. We'll see what happens.
Anyway, thanks Dave for your input! Keep it coming.

I got out that trusty 20 year old saw that was pictured in the very first
post. I never used it until now. It came with the house! Hehe. I cut out
one of the four bay bottoms...easy enough. I screwed the steel weight
to a piece of scrap wood and cut it with a miter box saw. I wasn't sure
if cutting steel was smart and I wasn't about to get my fingers that
close to the blade. Sparks flew and it cut right through. I realize it
probably isn't that great for the blade. Anyway, because of the car's
new length, the weight had to be shortened. Measurement-wise, the
bay spacing to the trucks is still about right so I left them alone. I'll just
center the third bay and be done with that part of the project. At this
point, I'm done with measurements!

Jeff the vertical bar is the retainer valve piping and yes there was a change to the position of the brake wheel. I believe 1968 was the year ACF went to the low mount. 8)
