I have bought the Tomytec power chassis from this guy in the past, although they come from Japan they are reasonable and fast shipping.

So here's the thing. If any one out there wants to make a mold out of my frames and keep on casting by all means feel free. The casting aren't award winners, but do with them as you wish. Spread the love :-*

I think that the only difference between the 105 and the 107 is the colour of the trucks.

The 105, 106 and 107 are all the same mechanism wise, each has different sideframes on the trucks as each is intended for a specific use, ie trolley, interurban, etc. They were made to add power to non-powered models available in Japan (and I don't believe made by Kato) hence the different variations. None of the sideframes are anywhere close to an American switcher so all need to get ground down and have replacement sideframes added.

The tomytech chassis mentioned was made specifically for the Tomy made shells and comes with 3 different style sideframes on a truck designed to have sideframes added, ie the sideframe isn't integral to the structural integrity of the truck. If they were shorter they'd be great to add power to many small switchers, but as they are, they're a bit too long to be useful and too short for most locos, unfortunately (they scale out to be 39' and 49' long [12 and 15 meters]). Just the right size for cheater boxcars though  :-\

Just a point about the 11-107 / 11-105 sideframes on the trucks. The 11-107 sideframes are thicker and require more filing to get them narrowed. I know this cause I have used these and compared them with 11-105's.

The Tomytec mechs (yes I have 3 of these) are a lot Bigger than the kato. You would have to do a lot of surgery to squeeze one under the 44 tonner , also the trucks are too big (too long anyway).

Just some thoughts.

I grind mine down with a heavy duty cut off wheel in a dremel tool:

Soon as I start to see the holes for the axle points I stop. After I glue on the new frames if needed I dig out the axle dimples from the inside with one of these:

When I do this I hold the bit with my fingers and twist, it's all thats needed. Even egging these out a little oversize is fine as they are just a place for the pickup cups to sit in.
