Hey Charles,
How's it going Mate!! I was trying to find your 70 tonner pictures they seem to have gone!

Hi again Alister -- I've been here although a bit waylaid for a while -- got into Meccano as a side-hobby during the summer so I haven't done the trains proud recently.  But they're still here, and the room is still in one piece with the layout in it.  Admittedly part of it was because I was trying to do the sideframes and it was 7 months before my resin casting kit arrived (aaaaargh!).  That happens sometimes.  Now it's all here and I can cast my sideframes for the 70-tonner.  Then I'll re-post some pictures, maybe.  It was a bit of a downer that all the pictures disappeared, that makes you give up posting them...  I'm used to computers before Windows, when they worked always and never lost data! :-)))  Perhaps I'll dust them off and re-post them for another temporary viewing...

Lol, that's why I use Linux.

Anyway, I still haven't gotten any of these, although I would like to get one or two.  I wouldn't mind some sideframes.
Thanks much,

Hey Cobber,
You need the following

A Kato 11-1105, 11-1106 or 11-107 powered chassis.
Sideframes from Chris333
Patience, patience and good ACC glue.
Moldable lead putty or Richies Loon stuff. (this is the weight)
Accumates or MT's
Some footsteps from GMM, BLMA or whoever does them.
010 wire for handrails or Richie used trainmaster handrails from Atlas.
If you want to stretch the chassis look at the thread for what Tom Mann did using the I beam but I wouldn't put the pickups on the shell (a bit of a bugger)

Thats about it and when you are finished don't park it under a roo eh! ;D ;D

cheers
Alister

I'm stuck. The sideframes are coming along nicely, the shell is painted and decalled, the critter engine still works (after the surgery on it for fit and lighting) and the directional LEDs light, but ...

I can't find room in that tiny shell for the #$#%@#@ huge 100 Ohm resistor. If I can remember back way too many years, if I take 4 1/4W 400 Ohm resistors (say surface mount) and put them in parallel they'll equal a single 100 Ohm resistor. And won't they be able to take 1 full W that way in parallel also?

While I'm asking stupid questions, is there a good place to learn wiring basics as it'd apply to this hobby? Things like 'how do I keep from burning out a LED' or 'how do I make lighting directional' etc.

The new chassis don't have the resistor. On the old one I replaced it with this:

You can look up the color bands to see what kind it is.

If you're using the older chassis with the resistor, a good replacement one is the Radio Shack 271-1311 100-ohm, 1/4 watt resistor - comes in a 5-pack.  I've yanked all the Kato ones I had but 1 and replaced them with these.

Jason,
I sent you a PM.

I didn't think there would be this many 44T's out there. I have made around 55-60 sets of sideframes and sent them out. The mold is starting to get a little bit worn, this is right as I think about 20 is normal for a RTV mold. I'm pretty sure I gave an extra set of castings to everyone just in case.

I will keep making them, but they will get worse as time goes on.

This mold was made from castings I sent out about 2-3 years ago, they were sent back to me, I cleaned them up and made a new mold. The original casting were then returned, if it weren't for them I would have nothing now.

I actually don't even need any of these new(er) sideframes for myself since I still have the 44T trucks I made a while back. The old frames were found and I had the stuff to make them and the 44T craze re-started. It's always fun to watch the progress on the forums so what the heck.

So here's the thing. If any one out there wants to make a mold out of my frames and keep on casting by all means feel free. The casting aren't award winners, but do with them as you wish. Spread the love :-* ;)
