Hows about a passenger car?

Er, since passengers are fussier about cleanliness than freight, most railroads kept their passenger cars clean, so not much of a weathering challenge there, IMHO.  ;)

And not much to work with in N either.

BTW, Mike Skibbe could probably walk in and OWN that one...

But now I need to come up with a good one.

Any other suggestions/requests?

If you want to do a passenger car, Ed why don't you say any rollingstock in the passenger service. This could be a passenger car, diner out of a passenger car, mail boxcar etc. This way it could possibly fit into any layout and there would be more weathering ideas.

Just a thought!

Here's a weathering challenge that's available in both N and HO. While PRR kept its passenger cars clean, the same could not be said for its baggage cars. Since Walthers makes a PRR B60b in HO, and Hell Gate Models makes one in N scale, and these were found in passenger trains throughout the nation, why not a B60b. Not only were they owned by PRR, but some made it into PC livery and promptly got just as dirty. It's a pre May 1, 1971, car though, Amtrak didn't take them.

Just a thought...

I wouldn't think no reason why it has to just be rollingstock, just something with passenger loco's or cars. Not a specific car either like 3rdrail said because a lot of people don't have a use for that kind of car. That's why I was think maybe even a diner or rail office made out of passenger equipment. Just about everyone needs structure related items for there layout. This way it should work for just about anyone! ;)

As another suggestion, perhaps not for this month, since its already the beginning and something needs to get picked, how about instead of a particular car type, a particular type of weathering, i.e. flaking rust, steam dirt, flaking paint, paint outs, or even (shudder) graffiti?

And I think cars are a better choice than loco, after all, the PRR B60b was indeed used on a bunch of roads other than Pennsy but its still very limited in time and that's still less restrictive than a loco would be. You'd have to pick a loco that's readily available, and sorry, $100+ doesn't count are readily available, not if you want to interest new people in weathering, and can be found in both HO and N (the GP 38[-2] is a good example, there are 2 N choices, one available and train set like in quality, the other much harder to find and not currenly in production, whereas in HO you can find decent ones). You'll also be limiting the era with the choice, ie picking some sort of early cab unit won't be of any use to anyone modelling 70+ and picking an AC4400-CW or SD90 won't be helpful to folks who model before '90.

In trying to make the overview of the past challenges I was trying to get together (btw, does anyone at all have the pictures from last June so I can complete that?) I don't remember seeing a gon in the mix. And those beasties were badly beaten up so the folks who want to pull out their soldering iron and take out their aggressions would have an outlet.  ::) Spans many eras, from 30's to current, since you're doing the challenge now with a BYOP (photo)
