Fountain Inn, SC. May 6, 2026. I was leaving the post office when I heard them blowing for the crossings south of town. I hurried up and got in position to get this shot by the depot. Luckily the sky was overcast so it helped even out the light.

Small world. I photographed this one last week passing the Savannah GA station.

Two weeks ago, the Better Half and I took Amtrak round trip from Harrisburg to Savannah, stopping on the way down for an overnight in Wilson NC to visit family. Although some aspects of the trip were less than stellar (price for parking in Harrisburg, and renovations in process at Philadelphia, for example), over all the trip was good. Thoroughly impressed with Savannah - we walked several miles over the course of the four days we were there. Lots of history there, including the Georgia State Railroad Museum.

Amtrak was two hours late getting into Wilson, and again the following night getting into Savannah, which was blamed on trackwork and competing CSX freights. The northbound trip was on-time at every station though. Other impressions:

The Amtrak personnel we engaged with were all friendly and helpful - some downright funny. Especially the Savannah station personnel.

Propulsion-wise, we had ACS-64's from H-burg to Philly. A GE P42 led the Palmetto south from there to Wilson. The next days' train, and the northbound edition the following week had Siemens "Chargers". The acceleration of the Chargers was impressive.

Washington Union Station is a sight to behold.  PHI not so much, but should be much nicer when the renovations are complete.

I was stunned by the number of trains that passed us in the opposite direction on the Northeast Corridor.  There really is no better way to get between DC and NYC or Boston.

And, we're doing this again next week - taking the Vermonter to Montpelier VT and return.  All this because we bought USA Rail Passes back in January when they were on sale for half-price.

The BNSF is sending a bunch of SD70Macs down the Joint Line on their way to scrap.  This was today's train.

They scrapping those?     They look like they are in pretty good condition exterior wise.
