This scene at Norden where the old roundhouse used to be really would lend itself to a layout.

I could be wrong, but I believe the old roundhouse was around the bend near tunnel #6.

Regarding the crackle paste, I'm thinking that coloring it first, before spreading it, could solve the adhesion problem.

Looks like there is still something to be learned about technique for controlling the size of the cracked parts.

If you have a larger area to cover, you could try a very thin layer of white glue and then play with the thickness of the crackle paint while the glue is wet.. The thinner the layer of paint, the smaller the crackles. Figure painters use this stuff a lot and with very thin layers. Green Stuff World has a good choice of pre-coloured crackle paint that can be applied in thin layers.

The pic I took (drone shot) is looking west;  Photos 3,4, and 6 in the link below are generally viewing the same place as the photo I took, just from the ground and closer.

Tunnel 6 is.. I'm not really sure.  It would be close to Sacramento but not on my timetables/track notes for the Roseville Sub.  Tunnel 41 is the "big hole" through Mt. Judah/Donner Peak behind the pic.  Maybe you were thinking of a different subdivision?
