GATX Tank Train

I suppose folks have been seeing these for a while, but it was a first for me.

This particular CN consist had several groupings of these GATX “Tank Trains”, and I counted one string of 17 cars all linked at the top of each car end by those heavy-duty, wide-diameter flex hoses/conduits:




The other pleasantly surprising observation was the total absence of graffiti … not one errant drop of auxiliary paint to be seen (yet!). 

As I say, new to me, so thought I’d share.  Might be tricky to model!

Doh!  And yet again, I’m late to the party.  I googled the Tank Train, and learned that these were around for a while (both the proto AND some factory models). 

Oh well, I guess it’s nice to see that they’re still out there.  And as I pointed out, the 50 or so cars that I saw today all looked shiny, clean and new.

These Tank-Trains are used to service an oil power plant near Bath, Ontario IIRC. They're in captive service hauling oil from a refinery in the Maritimes.

They've been running Tank-Train sets there for years, but these are in fact brand-new (or fully refurbished) sets to replace/upgrade the existing cars in service.

The Bath plant switched to gas many years ago, but the tank trains were a fixture before then.

Just for the record, I’ve now seen these TankTrain configurations several times since I posted that pic a few weeks ago, always on the York sub, passing through Markham, Ontario.  Out of curiosity, I counted the cars, and there’s usually 17 in a “consist”.  And still no graffiti … so refreshing to see!

Some of the oil arrived via Port of Albany and was routed north via D&H. I waited all day at Newtonville in 1998 (I think) for a detoured D&H TankTrain, routed D&H via Buffalo, then CN from Buffalo to Bath (plant only accessed via CN trackage), due to a nasty derailment along Lake Champlain. Was supposed to be a set of CP units, not a bad catch along CN... unfortunately they put CN power on it at some point (other detoured traffic kept CP power, but was routed CP). At least it made it out there before the sun set.
