Sneak Peek - New, Revived ONR “Northlander”
« on: December 24, 2025, 04:02:58 PM »

A previous Ontario government terminated Ontario Northland Railway’s “Northlander” rail service (Toronto to Timmins) many moons ago.  A couple years back, the current government promised its return.

An observant YouTuber was lucky enough to catch what is probably the first all-new consist making its way through the greater Toronto area.  Seems that manufacturing is in California, and the UP loco is delivering the train from source to final destination.

Kinda special … a never-seen-before train, being hauled by a loco/livery which is equally rarely (if ever) seen in these parts.

The foam net was buzzing that day, and it was indeed the first set delivered.

Same train but not a carbon copy, different seating arrangement I'm told. Three sets apparently.

I shot it's predecessor often enough between 1998 and 2012 as the SB got into Gravenhurst (100 miles or so north of Toronto) around 1400hrs. Not a train one could chase, but CN 450 was usually close behind it and that could be chased. The F units (CAT repowered, turned out to be turds) and GP38-2's powering it were worthy of the effort, as were the ex GO Transit single level coaches.

I should make the effort to shoot the new train next fall when I visit Toronto. And the Havelock. And......

That thing, so ugly. I remember seeing it once or twice but was too young to photograph (or I just wasn't shooting trains back then).

The ex-GO single level cars on ONR were extensively modified from their original configuration.
