I remember Lee having the turntable pit on the yard he transferred to Ed that has become Windsor St yard. I am looking to do something similar in a corner of my Southern Railway layout. Brief backstory: Tuscumbia AL(where my dad grew up and where I visited as a kid and found my love of trains) was one end of one of the earliest railroads in the US. It was created to get cargo around the Muscle Shoals on the TN river. As railroads expanded Tuscumbia became an major point on the Memphis and Charleston RR which was eventually a part of the Southern. The yard and loco facilities quickly outgrew downtown Tuscumbia and moved out to Sheffield. The beautiful station and offices building in Tuscumbia remains and is a museum and event space. The town recognized its heritage by building a scaled down three ish stall roundhouse section that is city event space. There is some rolling stock there as well. The new Sheffield facilities were used until the mid 70s(my time frame) when the current Sheffield hump yard was opened. As with all steam facilities they slowly fell into disuse and with the construction of the new yard were removed. I never saw them in person. They were gone by the time I can remember things. But my grandfather talked about them regularly. We would walk the field where they were and find spikes. So on my railroad there will be the remains of Sheffield shops. The car shop was one of the last buildings to go. I have aerials that show it with old boxcars in it(or at least parked on tracks leading to it) I have that modeled on the layout. I am planning to put a small edge of the turntable pit filled in the back corner. There will be foundations of roundhouse and places where the RR tore them up to re route track to get the last bit of utility out of the facility before it was finally gone.


What I am asking for are pics of roundhouse remains that were on property still in use. I am thinking it would be concrete pads with filled in pits with rails still in place barely seen. Maybe even a course or two of brick in some places. But pictures are way better than conjecture and imagination. If you have anything that fits the bill I would appreciate it.

I know of these two locations that had turntables that are now gone.

At Bethlehem, PA you can see the remains of the roundhouse but the turntable is completely gone and tracks run through the area. https://maps.app.goo.gl/H2zXjj6Ed42AGxm96

Pasco, WA, ex-NP/BN, now BNSF.  I can remember being in the roundhouse in the 1960s and 70s.  About all that's left is some concrete and a few unused tracks.  There's a modern enginehouse on part of it.

I think this is the old C&O yard which CSX no longer uses.   All abandoned.

More places to look, not that hard to find....

Winslow, AZ, where all the concrete pads are still there by the active turntable.  No brush there!
Oil City, PA, where it's almost invisible inside the curve on the south side of the Allegheny River
Erie, PA, where the PRR line from the south comes in to the east-west main lines, tree covered, but concrete pads still visible
Salamanca, NY (Erie, EL)  93 E. State St., but go to aerial view, you can just barely still make it out
Olean, NY (1012 Vine St, go to aerial - roundhouse still intact and everything else gone, ex-PRR)

And if all that makes you ill, and you need to see one not demolished, check out Huron, SD.   Incredible.  Active shop, was main DM&E shop.  My favorite feature of that one is the ramp to let a Bobcat loader down into the turntable pit to clear the snow out.  One of a handful still used as a major diesel overhaul shop.

Great info guys! I really appreciate your input. From these pics there is definitely enough to model from. Now to go about doing it. I think I will try a thin sheet of styrene cut to the right size with rails spliced into it and rectangles cut out for pits. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
