Interesting question, I too have been pondering how best to install ditch lights on my Life-Like GP9RM’s. My locos are fully dcc with the LokSound 5 Atlas Legacy 58751 decoder. So I would be looking at using 0201 SMD LEDs, probably 2700 kelvin warm white, and porch mounting the ditch lights. I recently purchased CMR Productions 3D printed ditch lights for the CN GP9RM, that are porch mount style. They are quite tiny and fragile to handle. I asked some of my crew in Toronto and some said to use end glow fiber optic filament and route back to either an LED or the decoder board light. Others said to run the 0201 SMD LEDs through the body shell and route the magnet wires to the decoder board (with appropriate resistors) and scratch-build the ditch light housings. I am at a crossroads here, and I have (3) locomotives sitting on my workbench waiting for ditch lights. Hope to shed more light on this topic. Cheers 🚂
