Not tall enough for coil steel, sheet steel? see them every now and again, covers look like those used on river barges but smaller.

Usually any type of material that is fine enough to be carried away on the wind. Ore concentrate is a common load, though not necessarily down in PA. Ontario Northland uses them out of Noranda, PQ. CP and CN covered gons carry copper ore concentrate to smelter in Sudbury, Ontario.

There a shot in Morning Sun's Ontario Northland in Color Vol 1 of a cloud of ore dust coming from uncovered gons at speed (pic from 1970's iirc), so the covers are definitely necessary.

The Mineral Range out of Ishpeming, MI., uses them for minerals out of the old Humbolt mine, too.

Kentucky Electric Steel, now Steel of West Virginia, uses similar cars for bars and rods.  It isn't just steel coils that need to be protected, any steel product that needs to be kept rust-free can go in one.

My good friend had almost an identical situation on his basement layout, and naturally, it worked out there was a small yard right there.  So you 'drew' that assignment in operating sessions right under the pipe.

As we were 'naming' stations when we got to panels, and he was an Appalachian modeller (PRR/B&O) I had to check out the Official Guide.

Took me a minute, but it stuck and became permanent:   "Falling Waters, WV"

(inspiration was Gasmeterzag in John Armstrong's Canandaguia Southern (O Scale) but I always loved the name.

I had that same situation but buried it behind false cabinets - in my wife's hobby area!
