I bought three other items at the Bachmann  store and had to pay $8 shipping on the entire order
$24 was a sale price at the other place not including shipping
It pays to shop around sometimes  edit,$24 is a twelve pack of couplers 😞

Are you sure you are comparing the same quantities? Everything I found online with your description was a full card of 12 pair. 12 x 2.92 = 35.04.

Bachman parts store sells replacement parts usually in single quantity where (like Mike mentioned) dealers get the blister packs with multiple couplers per pack.

But regardless of the price, why buy those hideous, huge "boxing glove" knuckle couplers (which also feature those easy-to-lose knuckle springs) where there are many other coupler choices out there?

I'm putting these on a f7  out of a Stallion train set I got at Hobby lobby on clearance putting better couplers on could be done but would be tricky due to the way the factory ones are mounted   Giving it a makeover including a Loksound Nano  and body repaint into Union Pacific

Yes, using better couplers will likely require some modifications.  I'm also wondering if Accumates would be a drop-in conversion (if you can find them)?  While they are not the best looking couplers, they look a lot better than the Bachmann "boxing gloves".

Might also make sense to edit your initial post and change the subject line to something less accusatory.
