C&O Historical Society is offering 0-6-0 Fireless Cooker shell:

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-frt/ppl-s00l17.jpg

What would be a good mechanism to power this shell? Bachmann Porter 0-6-0 is suggested for HO version, I can't find this in N.

Thanks.

Bob.

No guarantees as to fit, but the Bachmann 0-6-0/ Prairie mechanism is a good one and has pickup through the drivers as well as the tender trucks.

I don’t know which N scale 0-6-0 mechanism has the smallest diameter wheels but that is the one we want. The Bachmann  0-6-0 looks like the wheels may be too large, but I have not measured.  Of course, tender pickup is not applicable to the fire less cooker.

We may be in @mmagliaro territory here, i.e. a scratch-built mechanism.

Fleischmann and  other European manufacturers like Roco and Minitrix have produced small 0-6-0T locos. Those have small diameter drivers. They are probably all out of production.  I don't have any specific dimensions handy - sorry.

The N scale Thomas mechanism, perhaps?

He runs really well, but no valve gear...

Those are the ones which came to my mind as well. Nearly every manufacturer made them, so they shouldn't be hard to find on ebay.
This is the one from Fleischmann:

I think I have one of those. I could measure the drivers if you are interested.

I rust remembered that Liliput made a model of a Fireless steam loco. It has very small drivers.

Reading the web page description (which looks to be awkwardly translated from German, maybe by machine), this seems like a interesting little model critter.  Somehow it has a flywheel and a Next18 DCC socket.  Wonder if there is actually room for a decoder?

Also, apparently they built 200+ copies of this little beast in the 1980s!

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Yes, DM-Toys is a German company. The descriptions on the English language version of the website (not surprisingly) do appear to be machine translated.  If there is a Next18 socket then I'm sure there is a room for a decoder in there.  Maybe not a sound decoder.

And the model is actually on sale for a very reasonable (for today's prices) $150.  There are 3 paint schemes available.  I chose to show the typical black, but there is a yellow and green version too.

That's right. DM-Toys can install a decoder for you.  I forgot, since I do my own installs.

Just ordered one.
May use a Minitrix 0-6-0 mech with a new motor.   Now to figure out an industry for it to work in…
