SPERRY RAIL SERVICE UNIT

I slightly modified a TOMIX KiHa 40-2000 Rail Car, repainted SRS Yellow and Silver, added some details from the box, and added DCC to a KATO RDC4 frame. Decals are from CIRCUS.  Have to DREMEL cut lower tabs on side glazing to fit KATO frame. Once finished, I can run it on Club layout.

This is awesome. I’ve always wanted to do a SRS car. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Craig.

That's probably the neatest 'stock' conversion of a Tomix japanese equipment to a US prototype, not exact, but unless you hold up photos, nobody knows or cares.   Painting and finishing is just excellent.

Oh, and for fans of this stuff, Plaza Japan is restocked on a lot of Kato japan and Tomix stuff even though the ebay site is now kind of stripped.   But if you aren't single-unit ordering, the DHL freight charges are about $17 an order, more expensive than Japan post, but not nuts either.

Yes, the shell looks very impressive.  It will be interesting to see what the completed model looks like when installed over the modified Kato chassis.

I am green with envy . Outstanding . Better an not exact prototype than wait for manufacturers to smell the lettuce and get off their collective thumbs .

To echo what others have said, nicely done.  8) Bonus points for a creative re-purposing of a foreign model to an American proto! +++++++++++++++++++++

I'm now looking at picking up one of these (though I would probably just use the tomix chassis - the real Sperry cars had different trucks on each end).

Thanks for the inspiration!

Mark

This is awesome.

Did you use the HO set for Sperry trucks that Circus City recently did, or have a set made for N?

Decals are CIRCUS SRS Truck for HO scale.  The sheet has two different widths of Black Striping. I used the narrower stripes from two sets of decals. The next model will either use the "SPERRY" insignia as per the 1st model above, or I might paint as the "no stripe" older version using WALTHERS #1235 HO SRS decal sheets. I have sufficient decal sets for four units. The TOMIX KiHa 40-2000 shell (cabs at both ends, and NO subway side doors) is quite close the the SRS style (just expensive to obtain). Plus, you can see these units on about every railroad in North America, and other continents.
