Seen a post from someone on FB about a new car coming from Athearn in N scale.  Nothing official that I've seen from Athearn directly.

Edit: Just seen the announcement page, it's the Acid tank car.  First time in N scale Type F double shelf coupler

well there goes more money out of my wallet.  Hopefully they will sell the couplers separately so I can refit all my tank cars.

They could make a major improvement to their announcement page by including the scale with the headline. The top several announcements are all HO. The ones below are N. The only one that mentions scale at all is the second acid car listing, which notes that it is the first time in N scale. Apparently also doing more milk cars in N (since they list it twice).  Of which I already have enough/too many, but hopefully they run some extra trucks for them, as those are useful.

Can anyone ID the time frame and manufacturer for the tank car?

WTF is a double shelf coupler?

It is a coupler designed so it won't come apart in the case of a derailment. It is widely used on tank cars because one of the major problems with tank cars in a derailment with a standard coupler is that it can de-couple vertically as the cars bounce around. And then the coupler of one car punches through the end of the next tank car, causing it to spill. Apparently, have several cars roll over is less likely to cause a spill than having one or more loose couplers punching holes. DOT cars have been required to have them since 1980.
