Micro connectors

Hi, I'm working on a couple of engines that go back a while and have no way to separate the engine and tender due to their DCC wiring. I've found some small 6 pin connectors with one side wired that might do.. Any suggestions regarding actually soldering to the tiny pins and wire guage to use? I've already botched a couple!

Unable to do pics at this time, camera went swimming with me. These connectors were on E-bay from China, white plastic, flat two piece, socket side has 6 wires, plug has none-just exposed pins on the back.

They are listed as "10 set MiniMicro JST HX to 4 pin plug 24AWG wire Cable Connector" on Flea bay @6.27. I bought 6 pin 1mm Connectors of this type. Want to learn best practice for soldering on plug side. I'll splice decoder onto wires provided on wired side.
